About 50 years ago, during the Jesus Movement in the 1970s on MSU campus, students began coming to faith in Jesus and experiencing the power of the Spirit. Professor Lewis Moncrief led the Spirit of Christ Fellowship on campus, eventually becoming a church (with Moncrief as the founding pastor), as young couples committed to live their lives together on mission in the greater Lansing area.  Gatherings moved from place to place over the years, until the church's current property in Haslett was purchased and developed in the late 1990s.  Pastor Jessie Still has been serving as SOCC's Senior Leader since 2013. 

In January 2026, SOCC merged with Capital City Vineyard (which also began on campus in 2001).  Like converging streams, these churches came together in unity for the sake of greater effectiveness and shared mission.  Pastor Jessie and pastor Kevin Shoemaker  now work together as co-pastors, and the new congregation, Spirit of Christ Vineyard (SOCV), is a part of a national association known as Vineyard USA.
